Website Updates and SEO Reviews | Week 35
Keeping up with changes
This week has been pretty hectic. Sort of. I’ve been working a lot on the new website and revamping my pages. It can be a bit tedious, but I also love the learning process of it all. I think it comes at a good time, as I work my way through the UC Davis SEO Specialization on Coursera. The SEO landscape is always changing and taking this series of courses is giving me a lot of new insights on where the focus should be and how to implement it.
Quick Thoughts on The UC Davis Course
I think my only gripe with the certificate course is that it’s a lot of book learning. So the main instructor teaches terms, good practices, and how to do said practices, but there are very few hands-on activities. So I feel like I know what I should be doing and what tools I should use, but I don’t really know.
The best analogy I can think of is someone reading everything they need to know about being a surgeon, but never doing any practicals or surgeries. So they know what they should do and how it should be done, but have never actually done it.
To solve that, I’m going to use my own site as a sort of hands-on case study. Part of that is the website revamp. Make everything a bit more focused, more consistent, and hopefully something more people can enjoy. At the end of it all, I’d love for it to be a live showcase of my skills for my portfolio.
Most things arrive back at the “job search” theme, but it’s my new “carrot” at the moment. I want to do one small thing every day that gets me closer to my “dream future self”. Future Gemma is employed in some shape or form and is happy to be learning and growing every day doing something she genuinely loves.
So, the goal is one thing every day. No zero days. Even if that one thing is just changing color or word on my website here or there.
On my mind this week:
A funny bunch of comics from The New Yorker reminding us that asking for things with confidence is okay.
“I need somebody to hold Texans accountable for all of the inhumane and unconstitutional mandates it subjects people to.” If you have no idea of the newest BS happening in Texas right now, @ _lyneezy’s explanation is short and hits all the main points. I don’t talk about politics on this blog much, but I am very much pro-choice and hate that this has to even be an argument in this country.
This video on how to lose all your friends by the guy from Better Ideas. A hilarious perspective way to talk about how to be a better friend.
One of my favorite Youtubers, nameishana, posted a new Toronto weekly vlog the other day. Her videos always inspire me not only to be more creative with my own videos, but also to be more organized offline, and even to get up and get working.
How was your week?
