Here are the essentials of “Gemma”. I graduated in 2015 with a degree in English and spent the next 7 years training and competing internationally for the country of Ghana. I ended my track career with the ‘Olympian’ title and a plethora of lessons, experiences, friendships.
According to my English department’s website, my degree means I was “provided with the tools of criticism and with a foundation in the study of British literature”. I think another way to say it is that I learned to research and create a discourse about whatever topic I happen to come across. In this day and age, I’ve called what I do “content creation”, but I’ve found that it’s more than that. It’s being able to tell a story that connects with people. It resounds with their experiences - oftentimes with a touch of humor involved.
While my seemingly unrelated career paths have been greatly unconventional, the life experiences I’ve gained along the way have allowed me to learn and grow in ways that I never could have imagined.
I’m actively building a life filled with happiness, love, and perpetual growth. I’ve been journaling and blogging for over 10 years and I don’t see that coming to an end any time soon. This space has become a sort of working brain dump. A place to share and catch up with loved ones, to decode my sometimes anxious, sometimes rambling mind, to slow down and capture the moments that often fly by without a second notice. And through it all, I hope to create in my own little corner of the Internet a place for bonding and shared experiences. A space to learn and grow; to find happiness in the everyday. Actively Gemma is a space where I inspire myself to try my best in whatever I do and hopefully, a bit of that inspiration rubs off on you.
I pick up any freelance writing and/or social media work that tickles my fancy. My dream job isn’t a specific company or industry. It’s a place that allows flexibility and growth. I love learning and take any opportunity to continue to grow. I do everything from writing articles, blog posts, and other miscellaneous things to working my "Millennial magic", as some may call it, on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. If you’re looking for a communications person, I’m more than happy to take the reins!
